This pizzeria in New Haven has been family owned and operated since 1938.
It was featured in the Doonesbury cartoon. According to their Web site, some of the famous people who have eaten there are "Frank Sinatra, Bill Clinton, Kathleen Turner, Don Rickles, Jimmy Durante and Gary Trudeau".
They make a fresh tomato pizza with a white sauce during the summer months when tomatoes are in season and can be purchased fresh locally. (See the picture.) There's also a well known clam white pizza.
Sally's still makes their pizza in a coal fired brick oven. They don't mass produce, so you may have to wait a bit longer than another place. And they don't take credit cards. But enough people consider it worth it, so there are lines, especially at popular times.
